Why is there a Royal Mail strike?

Royal Mail workers will be striking due to an ongoing row over pay, jobs, and conditions.

The Royal Mail proposed an offer to its workers, including a a 7% two-year pay offer, that the Communication Workers’ Union declared to be “derisory”.

The union argued that the offer was out of line with rising inflation and the cost of living.

The CWU has called off strike action that was planned for November 12 and 14, saying it wants to take more “proportionate” action.

Since then, the CWU has announced that Royal Mail workers will be striking around one of the busiest weekends of the year – causing more disruption than on an ordinary day.

Will my post be affected?

Due to the strike action, Royal Mail has confirmed that services will be disrupted.

According to Royal Mail, items posted the day before, during or in the days following the strike will be affected by delays.

Postal collections will also be affected on the days strike action is taking place – however, customers are still advised to continue posting items at post boxes or Post Offices.

Royal Mail said: “We’ll be doing what we can to keep services running, but we are sorry this planned strike action is likely to cause you some disruption.”

Despite Royal Mail having well-developed contingency plans, they cannot fully replace the daily efforts of its frontline workforce.

When are the Royal Mail strikes?

The strike action has been planned to coincide with one of the busiest weekends of the year – Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Communication Workers Union have announced that workers will be striking on November 24, 2022 and November 25, 2022.

The strike action has been organised on the weekend of Black Friday – the biggest shopping day of the year – undoubtedly causing more disruption to services than on an ordinary day.

There has also been a second 48-hour strike planned for November 30, 2022, two days after Cyber Monday.

Customers are being advised to post items as early as possible in advance of these strike dates.
